February is Heart Health Month

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for all Americans over 55 years old. Approximately 1 in 5 people have some type of heart disease in Calvert County and Maryland. Coronary heart disease accounts for the largest proportion of heart disease. Some risk factors associated with coronary heart disease are preventable, but many people are not aware of this important fact. Becoming aware of these preventable risk factors can reduce the risk of heart attacks. When a heart attack does happen delay in treatment can be deadly. Recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and taking quick action can save lives.

The Calvert County Health Department is recognizing Heart Health by offering free educational sessions to employees of local businesses and agencies to recognize signs and symptoms of a heart attack. “Act in Time” and “Heart Truth for Women” are one-hour sessions developed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in partnership with the American Heart Association. “Heart Truth for Women” is targeted specifically for women’s heart health.

Please call 410-535-5400/301-855-1353 ext. 343 to arrange for an “Act in Time” lunch and learn session at your agency or place of business.

Take action against heart disease. Learn the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and ACT IN TIME.
