Maryland Respiratory Illness Update:

Respiratory illness activity in Maryland continues to be low for the week ending January 24, 2026.

Key trends are as follows:

  • COVID-19 & Flu: Emergency Department visits for both remain low, with flu visits continuing to decrease.
  • RSV: Cases are slightly up but are on a downward trend.
  • Hospitalizations: Overall hospitalizations from these viruses have been decreasing for the past four weeks.

The XFG variant is the most common strain of COVID-19 identified by the state lab since early December 2025. Data shows this variant is not causing severe illness compared to others, which aligns with the state’s low rates of ED visits and hospitalizations.

Simple actions like washing your hands and getting vaccinated are the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
