What is recovery?
Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.
Recovery support services are non-clinical services that assist individuals and families to recover from mental illness, substance use and/or trauma. They include social support, linkage to and coordination among service providers within the community, and a full range of human services that facilitate recovery and wellness contributing to an improved quality of life
Peer Recovery Support Specialists are individuals who have common life experiences with the people they are serving. Individuals with mental and/or substance use disorders have a unique capacity to help each other based on a shared affiliation and a deep understanding of this experience. In self-help and mutual support, peer specialist offers their experience, strength and hope to other’s they are serving, which allows for personal growth, wellness promotion and recovery.
What does a peer support specialist do?
- Assists others in building their own self-directed recovery goals
- Find healthy alternatives to replace unhealthy activities
- Facilitate peer self-help and educational groups
- Use recovery-oriented tools to help their peers address challenges
